What Is Valerian Root and Why Is It Linked to Sleep?

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a flowering plant whose root has been used as a folk remedy for sleep, anxiety, and digestive complaints since at least ancient Greece. It’s one of the longest-studied herbal sleep aids, with clinical trials dating back to the 1980s, which means there’s a large body of research, but also a large body of inconsistent, methodologically uneven research to sort through.

Does Valerian Root Actually Help You Sleep? What the Research Shows

The answer depends heavily on which review you look at, and that inconsistency is itself the most honest finding. A 2006 meta-analysis in the American Journal of Medicine pooled 16 randomized, placebo-controlled trials with 1,093 patients and found a statistically significant benefit for a simple “improved or not” measure of sleep quality, but also flagged evidence of publication bias in that result, meaning studies with negative results may have been less likely to get published.

A separate systematic review the following year, examining 37 studies, concluded that despite valerian’s safety, the evidence did not support its clinical efficacy as a sleep aid for insomnia. The most recent focused meta-analysis, pooling 21 randomized controlled trials with 1,433 participants, found a small-to-moderate improvement in subjective sleep quality scores, self-reported sleep duration, and the likelihood of reporting improved sleep. But when researchers looked at objective, sleep-lab-measured outcomes, the only significant effect was on the length of one specific sleep stage, deep non-REM stage 3 sleep. Other objective measures showed no clear benefit.
